wlogo2The Waynesboro Generals stormed back from an early 6-0 deficit to lead in the late innings, but the Staunton Braves rallied last and won in 10 innings, 11-10, Wednesday night.

After the Braves roughed up starting pitcher Corey Armentrout (sophomore, Bridgewater) for eight runs on 11 hits in four and a third innings to jump out to an 8-3 lead after five, Waynesboro scored four in the sixth – the big blow coming on a two-run single by Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) – and three more in the seventh to lead 10-8.

Staunton answered in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs to tie the game at 10, and Generals reliever David Spinosa (sophomore, Columbia) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras.

Waynesboro had a golden opportunity to seize control of the game in the top of the 10th, putting runners on first and third with nobody out, but Braves reliever Nick Corbin was able to get out of that jam with no damage.

The Braves won with classic small ball in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs and runners on first and second, and an 0-2 count on pinch-hitter Frank Grandinette, Zac Fisher stole third and came around to score when the throw to third from catcher Roger Gonzalez (freshman, Miami) got away from third baseman Anthony Iacomini (junior, Cortland State).

Iacomini had four hits and four RBI for Waynesboro, which also had JoJo Woods (junior, Central Florida) going 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

Waynesboro falls to 9-11 on the season with the loss.

The Generals return home Thursday for a doubleheader against the Covington Lumberjacks. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 3 p.m., with game two scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
