Agenda 21? House GOP’s misplaced priorities

AFP

virginia-blue-oversizeIt was resolution time Monday night on the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates, and the Republican-majority chamber was in a conspiracy-theory-validating mood.

The House voted to support a resolution to fund a $17,440 study of an alternative currency in the event of a breakdown in the Federal Reserve system and a second measure prohibiting any local government in Virginia from implementing the non-binding Agenda 21 initiative aimed at promoting sustainable development.

Cue up the Tea Party Marching Band.

“Rather than focusing on real solutions to the pressing issues facing the Commonwealth, the Republicans have decided  to study an alternative currency, and oppose sustainable development, a purported U.N. plot against American values,” said House Democratic Caucus Chair Mark Sickles (D-Fairfax).

“Our constituents did not elect us for political theatrics.  Fortunately, we still have an opportunity to put these Republican Tea Party distractions behind us and instead work to improve Virginia’s schools and strengthen the middle class.  In doing so, I hope my friends on the other side of the aisle will pull a real transportation rabbit out of the empty HB 2313 hat,” Sickles said.
