Students can prepare for the SAT as juniors without giving up their activities, including sports, AP courses, extracurriculars, or time with friends. An effective SAT plan is based on early preparation, identification of the student’s weaknesses, and consolidation with the student’s schedule.

Students in Virginia should not just aim at taking as many practice questions as possible; they should take the diagnostic test, concentrated practices, full-length tests, and timing drills included in the schedule.

Begin with a diagnostic test

To launch SAT preparation, take a full-length digital practice test before diving into the study material for several weeks. This test will be the first indication of your proficiency level in tests and will also help identify the area with most potential improvement.

Make sure that you do the test under real circumstances. Look at your mistakes after you have done the test and find out whether the mistake was made because of your ignorance or because you misunderstood the test.

Identify when your study techniques are impeding your progress

More study hours do not automatically lead to better performance at school. Studying without setting time limits, constantly working through practice tests, avoiding mistakes, and revising information that you already know could lead to a false feeling of success with no results at all.

Students must also consider the relationship between their performance in class and their prep efforts. A good guide to the digital SAT can allow juniors to uncover common prep mistakes and modify their methods before wasting time preparing for their exams.

Develop a monthly plan for junior year

A long-range plan makes it easier to organize SAT prep since you will have a clear plan for every stage of the process. You can begin the school year with diagnostic testing, and then proceed in the following months to address weak areas through effective practice.

As the winter season comes, you should step up practice and do one more full-length test to evaluate your progress. The spring months can be loaded with AP classes, sports, and extracurricular activities, thus make sure you keep sessions shorter on the weekdays and make longer practice and review sessions on the weekends.

During late spring and early summer, work on the pacing and consistency and on reducing mistakes. You may change your study priorities, based on the results of your practice, allowing you to make a second attempt in case the first score is unsatisfactory.

Practice pacing rather than studying longer

In order to perform well on the SAT it is not enough just to work with the subjects. Students need to learn how to distribute their time in such a way that one hard question will not take all the needed time for dealing with easier questions.

Practice how to go forward if you get stuck on a difficult question. Digital SAT has some advantages due to the shorter modules, but you still need to figure out the right moment to continue.

Utilize the practice exams well

The biggest benefit of practice exams for students comes from using them not only to receive a final grade but also to find out what went wrong. Every missed question should be analyzed.

The analysis should focus on three types of reasons:

  • Lack of knowledge on how to solve the issue.
  • Understanding of the concept, but the wrong way to solve the issue.
  • Knowledge of the problem with quick failure to execute the required work.

An error log should consolidate the results of the analysis, as it would make it easier to spot the problems occurring again and again. If the same mistake occurs every time, then more practice should be directed toward developing the missed skill rather than random assignment of tasks.

Prepare for the SAT according to your college objectives

Having a strategy for SAT preparation may be helpful. Students in their junior year of high school should look for information about the policies of the college entrance examinations and the usual kinds of students accepted in schools of choice.

While applicants to selective schools will be likely to look at the highest scores possible, applicants who choose to apply to schools in different categories will likely come up with other goals.Of course, other important components of the application process will also affect the outcome.

Design an alternative testing strategy

Your initial SAT test should not be the basis of your entire test strategy. If you begin preparing for the exam well in advance of the first test, you will have some time in case you need to retake the exam for any reason.

You should keep in mind such things as the score reporting deadline, what subjects will need more preparation, and getting ready for another testing date. It is less stressful to build this option of retaking the test into the original plan in advance than to try to come up with an alternative when it is already too late.

Make your SAT plan work for you

An ideal SAT preparation plan for Virginia juniors is one that begins with a well-defined baseline and becomes increasingly refined over time. The use of diagnostic testing, specific practice, timing drills, multiple mock tests, and careful scheduling make preparing less burdensome as well as able to be integrated into regular activities rather than left as a piecemeal rush.

It is important to start early, follow up on progress, and modify the plan according to needs identified by the results.
