Republican Bob Goodlatte won an 11th term to represent the Sixth District in Congress on Tuesday, taking 65.6 percent of the vote to dispatch Democrat Andy Schmookler.

Among Goodlatte’s electoral strongholds in the district were Augusta and Rockingham, which gave the incumbent 74.6 percent and 73.1 percent, respectively, and combined provided nearly a third of Goodlatte’s 99,000-vote margin.

Schmookler, in defeat, had a few highlights of his own, winning Lexington with 52.1 percent of the vote, Roanoke with 51.7 percent of the vote and Harrisonburg with 51.1 percent of the vote.

Also Tuesday, Fifth District Republican Robert Hurt was re-elected with 55.4 percent of the vote, outpolling Democrat John Douglass and his 42.9 percent by a 43,000-vote margin. And in the Seventh District, House Majority Whip Eric Cantor beat back a surprisingly fierce challenge from Democrat Wayne Powell, with Cantor picking up 58.5 percent of the vote to Powell’s 41.3 percent to win by 64,000 votes.
