First report: Saturday, 1:10 p.m. A 23-year-old woman is among two people dead after gunfire erupted in front of a restaurant in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom early Saturday morning.

Genesis Jones, 23, had been in the city’s entertainment district celebrating her younger brother’s birthday, her older brother told Richmond TV station WTVR, and was an innocent bystander to the altercation and shooting that killed two and injured seven others.

According to Richmond Police, an officer on patrol observed a large crowd engaged in apparent confrontations on North 18th Street.

The officer responded and found an adult female, Jones, down and unresponsive with apparent gunshot wounds.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We were outside of Mamacita’s, we heard a few shots go off, like 10 to 15 shots,” Genesis Jones’s older brother, Zekiah Jones, told WTVR. “One of them actually went past my head and hit the building.”

Additional officers arrived and found an unnamed adult male down and unresponsive. He had also suffered apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other adults were located who had suffered gunshot wounds. All four were transported to a local hospital.

Three other adults with gunshot wounds were transported by personal vehicles to local hospitals.
