UVA Football: Latest updates from the transfer portal; no, no news at QB

Not burying the lede

I get emails all day and into the night about the QB situation, so I might as well lead with that.

No, there is no news (at least from what I would know) about Chandler Morris, the would-be incumbent QB.

Update on DJ Lagway: the former starter at Florida, who visited Virginia on Monday, just committed to Baylor.

Trust me, I’m not good at keeping a secret; if I knew, I would be telling.

Big keep for the wideout room

Good, actually, great news for the Virginia wideout room – Jahmal Edrine is back for another run.

Edrine, at 6’3”, 221, is literally a big target on the edge – he had 46 catches on 71 targets for 564 yards, 12.3 yards per catch, and one TD for the ‘Hoos in 2025.

To be square, it felt to me like he was a tad underutilized in terms of targets, given his skill set.

Thing is, his size makes him a hard cover one-on-one, forcing defenses to slide an extra guy in his direction, which opens up the middle of the field for the slots and tight ends.

To that point, having Edrine and Trell Harris, a speed guy (59 catches/83 targets, 847 yards, 14.4 yards/catch, five TDs) headed to Oklahoma, cleared the middle for slot receivers Cam Ross (53 catches/79 targets, 543 yards, 10.2 yards/catch, two TDs) and Kam Courtney (25 catches/37 targets, 234 yards, 9.47 yards/catch) and tight ends Sage Ennis (23 catches/37 targets, 214 yards, 9.3 yards/catch, five TDs), Dakota Twitty (11 catches/18 targets, 129 yards, 11.7 yards/catch) and John Rogers (9 catches/12 targets, 101 yards, 11.2 yards/catch, one TD) to do their business.

Of those guys, Ross and Ennis have exhausted their extensive terms of eligibility; Courtney entered his name into the transfer portal; Twitty and Rogers are expected to return for 2026.

Still need, obviously, depth and talent at wideout and in the slot.

Quick hits

  • Huge get on the D line: Gotta like the addition of edge rusher Matthew Fobbs-White (Baylor), a quick 6’3”, 235-pound junior. Fobbs-White logged 387 snaps in 2025, with 33 QB pressures and 20 run-game tackles.
  • Tennessee RB: Peyton Lewis, a 6’1”, 212-pound sophomore, adds talent and depth to the tailback room. Lewis rushed for 630 yards and 10 TDs in two seasons at Tennessee, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He wasn’t used much in passing situations: just 14 targets, with eight catches, across his two seasons in Knoxville.
  • Recent losses to the portal: Cornerback Emmanuel Karnley (657 snaps, 27 tackles, 76.8 NFL passer rating against) and backup center Noah Hartsoe (65 snaps). Hate losing Hartsoe because he’s depth on the O line; hate losing Karnley (who committed on Thursday to Washington) because he’s money in the secondary.
