The update on Jacari White, from UVA Basketball coach Ryan Odom: Odom is “hopeful” that we will see White back on the floor, sooner rather than later.

Aren’t we all.

White broke his left wrist on landing from a monster dunk in the 80-72 win over Maryland on Dec. 20.

Odom told reporters on his weekly ACC teleconference on Monday that White had “a successful surgery” – Al Groh used to say that surgery was successful if the patient survived, so we might need more than just the word “successful.”

“I think the process now is to get him in a different type of splint where he has access to his thumb where he can move his thumb around,” said Odom, noting that he had a player at VCU last year, Zeb Jackson, who had the same surgery, “and he was able to play pretty quickly. So, we’re hopeful that we can get him back here early in the ACC season. But it’s going to depend on how it goes.”

On Zeb Jackson: he was injured in practice on Nov. 1, 2024, and saw his first game action on Nov. 21.

If that rough time frame were to apply to the White situation, that could translate to a return as early as this weekend, for the game on Saturday at home against Stanford.

White is averaging 11.5 points in 18.5 minutes per game off the bench for the ‘Hoos, shooting 49.4 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three.

“We all miss him,” Odom said. “I think we all know what he can provide for our team when he’s open, or when he’s guarded, sometimes. He’s just really capable of making shots and making big plays. So, we certainly miss that. We’re without a really good player, and other guys have to step up.”
