Dinwiddie County: SUV crashes on I-85, catches fire, kills one

One person is dead and two were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Sunday on Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie County.

Virginia State Police report that a passenger in the vehicle was trapped as it caught fire. The driver and a second passenger were able to escape and suffered serious injuries. Both were flown to an area hospital.

The victim’s name has not been released.

The fatal accident occurred at 6:17 a.m. on I-85 southbound, near the 61 mile marker.

According to VSP, the white SUV was travelling northbound when it went off the left side of the interstate striking several trees before catching fire.

A passerby who attempted to rescue the trapped passenger also suffered minor burns and drove himself to an area hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
