In an effort to strengthen the leadership of local nonprofit organizations, a one-day conference is being offered by the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.
The “Leading Forward: Empowering Nonprofit Leadership for the Future” event will be held on Sept. 9 at Blue Ridge Community College.
Conducted in partnership with the Charlottesville-based Center for Nonprofit Excellence, it will include practical strategies to help organizations strengthen their teams, their board of directors, their communities and their long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
“Investing in the capacity of our nonprofit sector must extend well beyond our routine grantmaking activity,” said Dan Layman, CEO of the Community Foundation. “Through our workshops and conferences, executive director discussion groups, nonprofit coffee talks, and much more, our grants can have a greater impact when nonprofit organizations and their boards of directors are functioning at their highest level.”
The local nonprofit community has faced hardship recently as Mental Health America of Augusta and the local affiliate of United Way closed their doors, and the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Habitat for Humanity board dealt with questionable financial transactions made by the organization’s former executive director, Lance Barton.
Organizers hope a large contingent of the region’s nonprofit community comes out for a day of strategic professional development.

- “Board Building that Unlocks Your Organization’s Potential” with Dr. Shantell Chambliss
- “Influencing Team Engagement on Purpose” with Robert Kenney
- “Leading Effective Meetings” with John Thalheimer
- “Leadership Continuity” with Sarah Milston
“The conference will provide attendees with practical strategies and tools to build more effective boards, foster engaged teams, lead purposeful meetings and plan for leadership transitions,” said Lora Hamp, legal counsel and director of nonprofit relationships with the CFCBR. “It is our hope that participants will leave this event with fresh perspectives and renewed energy to guide their organizations toward long-term success.”
Lunch is included in the registration fee, which is based on a sliding scale.
