The United Way of Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro has ended operations because of increasing costs and declining revenues.
As an affiliate agency of United Way Worldwide, UWSAW will no longer serve the Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro community.
“The commitment of our staff and volunteers over the years has been unwavering, but the financial reality has forced us to reevaluate our role in this community,” said Courtney Thompson, chair of the Board of Directors, and the president and CEO of the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We are grateful for the impact we’ve been able to make over the years and are hopeful that working with United Way Worldwide and local United Way affiliates will keep much-needed services in our area.”
According to Dan Layman, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, the hope is that another organization will pick up specific programs led by the United Way. However, individuals and corporations who have supported the community with donations through the United Way will require guidance “to continue their philanthropy.”
The Board of Directors will work with United Way Worldwide “to determine the best path forward for United Way in the Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro community. Like other non-profits, UWSAW has experienced a notable downward trend in pledges and fundraising over the past few years.”
The United Way office in Fishersville is closed to reduce operational costs, but email communications will be maintained until a plan and timelines are established. The board “remains committed to supporting a smooth transition for partners and the community.”
