A large number of used tires were dumped near or into the Middle River over the weekend, according to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.

The ACSO received two separate reports of illegal dumping – with approximately 80 tires discarded on Bold Rock Road and River Bend Road on Saturday and Sunday.

On June 28, deputies took a report for Bold Rock Road near the Verona bridge where approximately 20 used tires were discovered dumped in the river.

On June 29, deputies were again dispatched, this time to River Bend Road, where three additional dump sites were located. An estimated 50 to 60 used tires had been discarded in this area into the roadway and the Middle River.

The ACSO is actively investigating these incidents and is asking Augusta County residents in the affected areas to review any surveillance footage from the evening and early morning hours surrounding these dates.

“We are committed to protecting the environment and the safety of our community,” said Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith. “Illegal dumping not only harms our natural resources but creates unnecessary cleanup costs and hazards.”

Anyone within this vicinity of these two areas that has video surveillance that shows suspicious activity or vehicles or information related to these incidents are asked to contact the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 245-5333.
