A 30-year-old man was shot on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville early this morning, and one man is in custody in the incident. One additional suspect is currently being sought by Charlottesville Police.
Lorenzo McAllister, 34, has been arrested and charged with:
- Reckless handling of a firearm
- Possession of a concealed firearm
- Discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school
According to police, the injured man, who has not been identified, was shot in the leg at 1:40 a.m. near Fitzroy on the Downtown Mall. Officers responded and rendered emergency aid and applied a tourniquet until medics arrived. The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to UVA Medical Center and is expected to recover, according to police.
Preliminary information suggests the incident may have begun inside Fitzroy and continued outside where the shooting occurred.
This is the second shooting on the Downtown Mall in the past week. One week ago, on June 7, a 25-year-old man was shot on the Downtown Mall at 1:26 a.m. He was in critical condition after the shooting.
In response, the Charlottesville Police Department has increased our presence in the area, including deploying multiple officers on foot patrol during peak hours.
The CPD is also actively coordinating with state partners, including the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, as both recent incidents occurred at or near licensed establishments.
