Waynesboro Public Library, through the sponsorship of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge and in partnership with the libraries of Augusta County and Staunton, is hosting an area-wide book read called One Book One Community.
The selection this year is Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgerton. It is the story of a spunky woman, a stray dog, a teenage delinquent, and the best home cooking in small-town North Carolina. This community read follows in the footsteps of the Big Read hosted once a year from 2008-2011.
During the month of March, free copies of Walking Across Egypt are available at WPL while supplies last. A book display on Southern fiction will also be set up in the library. In addition, everyone is invited to join the Wednesday Night Book Club on March 21 at 7 p.m. to discuss the novel.
Due to renovations, other activities are tentatively scheduled at WPL for April. On Saturday, April 7 at 12 p.m., an SPCA pet adoption event is scheduled. Find a new friend to take home like Mattie Rigsbee, the protagonist of the novel. Since culinary delights play prominently in the novel, Mollie Cox Bryan is slated to lead a discussion on “Food and Southern Literature” on Monday, April 9 at 6 p.m. Finally, the film adaptation of Walking Across Egypt is planned for Friday, April 13 at 6 p.m. as a part of WPL’s returning Friday Night at the Movies programming.
