Women’s Basketball: Virginia Tech coasts past reeling Virginia, 87-62

Remember how Virginia upset Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last month? The Hokies seem to have taken it personally.

Tech got out to an 18-point halftime lead and didn’t look back on its way to a convincing 87-62 win over the Cavaliers on Sunday in JPJ.

Not a good week for the ‘Hoos (12-13, 4-9 ACC) – with this blowout home loss, and the one from Thursday, to #22 Florida State, which perp-walked the Cavaliers to the tune of 101-68.

Virginia left Southwest Virginia after the 73-65 upset on Jan. 16 with an 11-7 record and 3-3 mark in ACC play.

Today’s loss makes for six losses in the last seven for UVA.

“Another embarrassing performance. We have not played well at home, gave up too many points, not executing. That’s why the game went the way it went,” UVA coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton said.

How many times can she say things like that?

Today was “embarrassing.” The loss to FSU on Thursday: “unacceptable.”

Another word should soon come to the fore: “accountability.”

Virginia had 18 turnovers and shot 2-of-16 from three in Sunday’s beatdown.

On the defensive end: Tech (16-8, 7-6 ACC) shot 58.5 percent from the field, and was 12-of-19 from three.

Kymora Johnson and Paris Clark each had 16 points for Virginia, as if that matters.

It’s one thing to lose; it’s another to be thoroughly defeated.
