Crews in the Culpeper District for the Virginia Department of Transportation are busy pre-treating interstates, primary and major secondary roads in anticipation of a significant winter storm on Sunday.

Weather forecasts call for the storm to drop as much as eight to 10 inches of snow across the nine counties of VDOT’s Culpeper District.

The highest snow totals are expected in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties.

Farther south, in Albemarle, Fluvanna and Louisa counties, snow totals may be lower and mixed with sleet or freezing rain during the storm.

Given the forecast accumulations, VDOT advises against travel during the storm.

On Saturday, motorists may encounter VDOT brine trucks spraying the mix of salt and water on interstate, primary and major secondary roads. These trucks and their escort vehicles travel at a slow speed to effectively spray the solution, so drivers are asked to allow them plenty of room.

Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to Twitter.com/VaDOTCulp.
