Retired Virginia State Police Superintendent W. Gerald Massengill has passed away. The news was announced by the office of Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Wednesday.

Massengill served as the superintendent of VSP from 2000-2003, at the end of a 37-year career with the law enforcement agency.

Youngkin issued a statement on the passing of Massengill:

“Suzanne and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Col. W. Gerald Massengill, a distinguished leader who dedicated his life to the safety and well-being of Virginians. Col. Massengill’s steadfast leadership during pivotal moments in our Commonwealth’s history, including the September 11th attacks and the D.C. sniper incidents, exemplified his unwavering commitment to public service.

“His tenure as superintendent under Governors Gilmore and Warner was marked by integrity, resilience, and a profound dedication to duty. Beyond his professional achievements, Col. Massengill was a mentor and inspiration to many in law enforcement, leaving an indelible mark on the Virginia State Police and the broader community.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him. His legacy of service and sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations.

“Col. Massengill’s contributions to public safety and his leadership during times of crisis have left a lasting impact on the Commonwealth of Virginia. His passing is a profound loss, and he will be remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude.”

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who was governor for the last two years of Massengill’s tenure as VSP superintendent, issued this statement on the passing:

“I mourn the passing of Colonel W. Gerald Massengill, a true public servant, whose dedication and commitment to the Commonwealth of Virginia left an inedible mark on us all. As the superintendent of the Virginia State Police, Colonel Massengill was a steady hand during moments of crisis. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Colonel Massengill’s service to Virginia and our country will never be forgotten, and we are all better for having known him.”
