Fifth-seeded Wake Forest got out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and coasted from there to a 5-1 win over ninth-seeded Virginia on a rainy Thursday night in the ACC Tournament semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park.

“You know, 25 minutes into that game, I could see the three road trips taking its toll on our team, no question about it. I could see that on our legs tonight,” UVA coach George Gelnovatch said after the loss, which shifts the focus for the ‘Hoos (10-6-3) on the NCAA Men’s Soccer Selection show, which is set for Monday, when UVA looks to earn an at-large bid to the 2024 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.

Virginia was ranked seventh in the NCAA RPI ratings going into the week, so a bid should be a safe bet.

Not much otherwise to say about Thursday night, other than that Wake (10-4-6) was dominant throughout.

“We have a whole season left ahead of us now with the NCAA Tournament. So, the message at halftime was like, let’s see. Let’s be aggressive. Let’s take chances. Let’s win our 3-5-2, let’s press higher up the field and get ourselves ready for the next part of our season,” Gelnovatch said.
