A wide load, indeed.

A 28-foot-wide steel structure will be making its way up Interstate 81 from Southwest Virginia on its way to Baltimore this week, making traveling on the I-81 corridor more adventurous than usual.

The structure, which is being used on a U.S. Navy construction project, will be moving from mile marker 13 in the Abingdon area beginning 9 p.m. Tuesday night. It will travel northbound through 6 a.m. Wedneaday morning, and if necessary, will also move northbound beginning again at 9 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday.

The move will involve a rolling lane closure with a Virginia State Police escort. The truck transporting the structure will block both lanes of travel in the immediate area as it proceeds up the interstate.
