WINNER: Schaub burns ‘Skins
Hard to say there was a loser on Sunday at FedEx. Matt Schaub threw for 497 yards in leading the Houston Texans to a come-from-behind 30-27 overtime victory over the Washington Redskins, who did everything but put Houston away in the fourth quarter.
Graham Gano had a chip-shot field goal blocked that would have given the ‘Skins a 10-point lead late, and Donovan McNabb just overshot Joey Galloway on what would have been a long, long touchdown pass in advance of the game-tying drive led by Schaub in the game’s final two minutes.
Props to Schaub for his play down the stretch.
Raise your hand, by the way, if you, like me, hate the rule that allowed Gary Kubiak to call timeout an instant before Gano’s apparent game-winning field goal in OT.
WINNER: Virginia Tech rallies for big win at home
But East Carolina, man, oh, man, exposed that Tech defense again, at least in the first half, putting up 24 points and moving up and down and up and down and up and down …
Credit to the Hokies for finally (!) getting it figured out in the second half, though the 49-27 final was deceptive.
WINNER: JMU
My thinking on where JMU would land if they ever made the move up from I-AA to I-A: Conference USA.
ECU is 2-0 in the C-USA. JMU is head and shoulders better than ECU right now.
And that’s with 22 fewer scholarships.
Ahem.

Auburn 27, Clemson 24, OT.
West Virginia 31, Maryland 17.
OK, we got a win with Florida State against an overmatched BYU team.
And N.C. State beat an overhyped Cincinnati on Thursday night.

BEST GAME YOU DIDN’T SEE: William and Mary rallies to beat ODU
I watched this one on Saturday night. (I kept track of Auburn-Clemson and Texas-Texas Tech, but …)
ODU is for real, by the way. The Monarchs, in their second season, did everything right but hold William and Mary on its last drive.
A sleeping giant has been awakened. Don’t be surprised if two Virginia I-AAs make the jump to I-A in the next five years, and that ODU is one of them.
