RBs, QBs get good grades at Tech scrimmage

The Branden Ore Era is over at Virginia Tech. The Sean Glennon Era is not.

Tailbacks Jahre Cheeseman and Darren Evans combined for 107 yards on 14 carries, and Glennon matched rising sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor throw for throw in Virginia Tech’s first full-scale football scrimmage Saturday afternoon.

Glennon was 10-for-18 passing for 61 yards and one interception – by Dylan McGreevey on a tipped pass. Taylor was 10-for-19 passing for 63 yards.

One interesting stat from the scrimmage – only four of the 20 completed passes went to Hokie wideouts. Tech is losing its top four wide receivers from its 2007 team.

Also impressive on Saturday was defensive end Jason Worilds – who had four sacks in the scrimmage, though the QBs weren’t live to pass rushers.

“I thought it was a typical first scrimmage,” Tech coach Frank Beamer said afterward. “I thought the effort overall was good. I thought the execution – we’ve certainly got to get better on both sides of the ball. But when you’re working with a lot of people, and particularly this spring when you’re working with a lot of new people, it’s only going to be so good in that first big scrimmage. From here on out, we’ll cut back the number of people we’re working with, narrow it down a bit, and get better execution.”

Virginia Tech’s spring game is set for April 19 at 2 p.m.
