Congregation gains new burial ground and meditation area

A strikingly contemporary sculptural screen and fresh new landscaping is the first thing to catch your eye as you pass by Grace Lutheran Church in Waynesboro.

New lighting and an inviting bench at the covered entrance at 13th and Wayne further enhance this corner of the property. Visitors who follow the gently sloped path curving down the hill to the stone patio, will find themselves at the heart of the space: a meditation area sheltered by low niche-bearing walls. This is the new columbarium, a place for Christian burial in the shadow of the church cross tower and surrounded by the daily activity of life.

Designed by landscape architect Proctor Harvey of Lynchburg, with work begun by the late William Spell, the columbarium is a harmonious addition to the site, and is enriched by the sculptural screen designed by Waynesboro artist Joan Huiner Ranzini. A brochure describing the screen’s symbolic motifs is available to visitors.

The columbarium will be dedicated during worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. Bishop James Mauney will be participating in the service. A covered dish luncheon will follow. Visitors are warmly invited to attend.

For more information on the chapel, visit www.gracewaynesboro.org on the web.
