Park Service wants your input on overlook changes

Six historic overlooks in the Shenandoah National Park are on the hook for modifications to make the compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Architectural Barriers Act – but first the National Park Service wants to know what you think about the whole deal.

The six – Jewell Hollow, Stonyman/ Hughes River Gap, Timber Hollow, Crescent Rock, Franklin Cliffs and Hazeltop Ridge Overlooks – will be the subject of a public-comment period running through Aug. 1.

The park service is proposing to lower curbstone in the area at all six to no less than five feet and no more than 13 feet – with rocks from the curb in the area where the change occurs being replaced flush with the overlook pavement to allow access to the guard rail, and the stone curbing tapering at each end to meet the actual curb height – to make them compliant with the provisions of the ADA and ABA.

Comments can be submitted at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/shen/ or mailed to: Superintendent, Shenandoah National Park, 3655 US Highway 211 East, Luray, Va. 22835.
