New With Good Reason episode highlights work by some of Virginia’s leading scholars

With Good ReasonWith Good Reason, a radio show and podcast produced by Virginia Humanities, releases “Whistles in the Mist.”

In this episode:

  • Mark Sicoli (University of Virginia), a linguist and filmmaker, discusses his film “Whistles in the Mist,” a look at a whistling style of speech developed in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, that can still be heard in a only a few places around the world.
  • Saikou Diallo (Dominion University) who, with his colleagues, made a 3D virtual recreation of Çatalhöyük that includes the sounds and smells of the ancient city.
  • Michael Mucedola (Longwood University) is one of the nation’s foremost experts on collecting old dimes. He discovered his grandfather’s tackle box filled with coins was actually worth a small fortune.
  • Joel Rubin (University of Virginia), a master Klezmer musician, speaks about the music and plays pieces from the album “Poyln” (a collaboration with his band “Veretski Pass”).
  • Katherine Preston (William & Mary) walks through the forgotten history of the American people’s love affair with opera and how the dramatic genre turned into theater for the elite.

“Whistles in the Mist,” is available today. Find it on local public radio, on popular podcatchers including Apple Podcasts and Google and on With Good Reason’s website. With Good Reason publishes weekly and is available for free.
