Fourth-ranked UVA posted one of those why did they even schedule that one wins Friday night at JPJ against an embarrassingly overmatched Coppin State.
Credit to Coppin State, for not completely throwing in the towel after falling behind 21-5 nine minutes in. A 10-7 sorta run had it at 28-15 with 4:51 to go in the opening half.
Then the ‘Hoos got serious.
A 17-0 run pushed the lead to 30, and Virginia went into the break up 45-17.
The lead would eventually get over 50, which is just ridiculous.
The best news was that coach Tony Bennett only needed Kyle Guy for 28 minutes, Braxton Key for 27, Ty Jerome for 25.
De’Andre Hunter had a mad efficient game, scoring 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting in 16 minutes.
Mamadi Diakite, in his first start of the season, had 18 points, also on 7-of-9 shooting, including a pair of threes, in 22 minutes.
Freshman point guard Kihei Clark had his best offensive game as a Cavalier, scoring nine points on 3-of-8 shooting in 22 minutes off the bench.
Jay Huff had nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in 16 minutes off the bench.
Not sure why you play these kinds of games.
