Game Preview: VMI basketball to open season Friday at Richmond

vmiVMI basketball will open its 2016-17 season on Friday when the Keydets travel to Richmond to take on the Richmond Spiders. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch the game in the Richmond area on digital 6.2 WTVR or for a small fee via the A-10 Network at atlantic10.com. In addition, an audio broadcast will be available in the Lexington area on AM 1450 WREL and VMIKeydets.com. Live stats can be accessed as well.

This year’s Keydets return three starters, including 2015-16 All-SoCon First Team and First Team All-State (VaSID) guard QJ Peterson, who ranks 11th in school history in points scored. Peterson will be bidding to become the sixth Keydet ever to go over the 2,000-point mark this season, and he’ll have backcourt mate Julian Eleby back alongside once again after Eleby was ninth in the SoCon in three-point percentage last season. Forward Trey Chapman is VMI’s other returning starter for the upcoming campaign.

Last Meeting with Richmond (11/16/2009):

Richmond shot 63 percent from the floor and scored 60 points in the paint as the Spiders cruised to a 103-59 victory over the Keydets on Monday evening, Nov. 16, 2009 at the Robins Center. The Keydets (1-1), meanwhile, were led by Keith Gabriel’s 17 points, all of which came in the first half. As a team, VMI shot just 32 percent from the field while connecting on six-of-16 free throws, a 38 percent clip.

A VMI win against Richmond would:

  • Be VMI’s fourth win over the Spiders in the last six meetings between the programs.
  • Be the first time that VMI had started a season with an in-state road win over a Division I opponent since the 1973 reclassification of NCAA athletics into divisions.
