Football: ODU defeats UTSA, 33-19, in C-USA opener

oduJeremy Cox and Jonathan Duhart each scored two touchdowns to lead ODU over UTSA, 33-19, in the Conference USA opener on Saturday at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

Cox also ran for a career-high 107 yards to lead a Monarch offense that recorded 445 total yards. David Washington went 21-of-35 for 207 yards and two touchdowns, both to Duhart, and also added 69 yards on the ground.

The ODU defense, which held UTSA to just seven points in the first half, forced a pair of Roadrunner turnovers and recorded four sacks.

Old Dominion carried a 19-7 lead into halftime. UTSA closed the gap to as little as six at 25-19 at the end of the third quarter, but Washington’s one-yard touchdown pass to Duhart early in the fourth put the Monarchs back up by two scores.

Defensively, ODU was led by TJ Ricks‘ 14 tackles, while Brandon Addison recorded the first interception of his career.

The Monarchs are back in action next weekend at Charlotte on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.

Notes: Old Dominion sold out its 50th straight game since restarting football in 2009 … Redshirt freshman Kane Miskel started his first career game at safety … With two carries on the first drive of the game, Ray Lawry now is the ODU all-time leader in rushing attempts … Miles Fox recorded the first full sack of his career in the first quarter … Fox now has 1.5 career sacks … David Washington reeled off a 41-yard first quarter run, the longest of his career … Washington’s 41-yard run is the third longest by a quarterback in ODU history, second to Thomas DeMarco’s 51 and 47 yarders … Brandon Addison with his first career interception to stop a UTSA drive late in the first half … Sean Carter recovered his third career fumble recovery on the first offensive play of the 3rd quarter … With two rushing touchdowns, Jeremy Cox recorded his first career multi-touchdown game … Brad Davis recorded the first touchback of his career … Zach Pascal caught a pass in his 40th straight game …Anthony Wilson recorded his second double-digit tackle game of the season … Travis Fulgham caught a career high X passes … Jonathan Duhart caught his second and third TD passes of the season and now has 11 for his career … TJ Ricks recorded the 11th double-digit tackle game of his career.
