Fishburne Military School announced today that, having completed the arduous 10-year reaccreditation process, the school has once again earned full reaccreditation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS).
The VAIS Reaccreditation Visiting Team awarded FMS a perfect score of 72/72.
Founded in 1973, VAIS has been the leader for promoting educational, ethical and professional excellence for Virginia’s best independent schools. Its accreditation program is one of a select few recognized at the national level through the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Commission on Accreditation and is also recognized and approved by the Virginia Board of Education through the Virginia Council for Private Education.
Fishburne Military School, which is a founding member of VAIS, first earned accreditation in 1897 through the then Southern Association of Secondary Schools (which later became known as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is now called AdvancEd). In the 119 years since then, FMS has never failed to earn accreditation, an honor that is unique in Virginia.
In a letter accompanying this Fishburne’s reaccreditation results, VAIS Executive Director, Betsy Johnson Hunroe, noted “Fishburne Military School passed all VAIS Standards, an accomplishment of which to be proud. The visiting team noted many strengths of the school, namely the completion of the strategic planning process, the obvious support of the school’s mission by faculty, staff, administration, and Board, and the attention to maintaining the school’s physical plan and financial operations.”
FMS Superintendent, Mrs. Susan Johnson, sent a congratulatory letter to the entire faculty and staff saying, “The entire Fishburne Family has tremendous cause for pride. The accomplishments of this small school continue to impress all those who see FMS in action. Your dedication to the process of guiding our young men to successful careers here and beyond is in perfect keeping with the highest traditions set forth by our Founder. You have continued to bring National honor to our little school on the hill and you are all to be commended for your tireless efforts to educate honorable young men.”
