Gavids Crash Pic 2The Waynesboro Police Department arrested a Nelson County man early Sunday morning after he lost control of the SUV he was operating and sent it careening into a popular city eatery.

Kevin Michael Platt, 31 years old of Afton, faces a single misdemeanor charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol/2nd Offense in 10 years from the crash that caused approximately $40,000 worth of damage to Gavids Steak House, 1501 West Broad Street.  He totaled the 2008 Hyundai Veracruz he was driving.

On Sunday at 12:20 a.m., officers along with personnel from the Waynesboro Fire Department and Waynesboro First Aid Crew responded to the scene of the single vehicle crash. Witnesses at the scene indicated that the vehicle was travelling west on West Broad Street at a high rate of speed when it failed to navigate the curve properly in front of the restaurant.

The vehicle left the road and slid sideways into the front entrance of Gavids which was closed at the time. Platt and a 46-year-old female passenger from Newport News and two dogs were in the vehicle.  The investigation showed that Platt and the passenger, who is the owner of the vehicle, attempted to change places after the crash.  Both were intoxicated.  Platt was eventually charged with DUI and had a blood alcohol content of .16.  There were no injuries and the female and the dogs were released.

Staff from the Department of Building & Zoning also came to the scene to examine the damage to the structure.

Platt was ordered held due to his level of intoxication and was transferred to Middle River Regional Jail.
