VMI drops series finale to Wofford, 12-4

The Wofford Terriers scored four runs in the first inning and led wire to wire en route to a 12-4 win over the VMI Keydets in SoCon baseball action Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va. With the victory, Wofford completed a three-game sweep.

A two-run triple by McClain Bradley three batters into the game gave Wofford (24-18, 8-7 SoCon) the lead for good. The Terriers added five runs over the next two innings, including a grand slam by Kody Ruedisili, to break the game open.

On the mound, Jacob Condra-Bogan (4-3) was the winning pitcher, as he scattered 10 hits over six innings. He allowed four runs – three earned – and struck out six. Spencer Kulman picked up his first save by pitching the final three innings and allowing only one hit, while Brandon Barbery (3-6) took the loss for the Keydets (18-26, 2-13 SoCon) after allowing five runs on six hits in two innings.

After taking an early 4-0 lead, Wofford gave a run back in the bottom of the first when a run scored on a fielding error. The Terriers scored once in the second, as did the Keydets to keep the game close at 5-2.

Jared Silva relieved Barbery to start the third and hit the first batter he faced, Dylan May. Cody Miller then singled and, after a sacrifice bunt, Chandler Engel was plunked by a pitch. Ruedisili then followed with a grand slam, his first home run of the year, for a 9-2 Wofford lead.

Ryan Bennett relieved and held Wofford to one hit over the next three innings, and the Keydets cut into the margin with single runs in the fourth and fifth. VMI could get no closer, however, and the Terriers sealed the victory with three runs over the final two innings to account for the final margin.

Offensively, Bradley had three hits for Wofford, while Ruedisili went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and his game-breaking grand slam. Dunlevy was 3 for 3 to lead the Keydets.

VMI third baseman David Geary missed the game due to a lower body injury, ending a streak of 91 consecutive games played.

VMI baseball will return to action Tuesday, when the Keydets travel to Richmond to take on the VCU Rams. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
