Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell and House Republican leaders highlighted the House’s legislative accomplishments at a press conference Wednesday, promising to continue to govern and lead for the remainder of the 2016 session.
“The House has been productive and successful in the first half of the 2016 session,” saidSpeaker Howell (R-Stafford). “We are making good progress on the issues that matters most to Virginia families: jobs, education, and healthcare. The House continues to offer conservative ideas, defend and advance conservative principles, and articulate a consistent governing vision. We prove time and time again that the Republican party is the party of ideas. I am proud of the House’s efficient work this session and I want to thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for their hard work. As we move into the second half of session, the House will continue to govern and lead.”
Speaker Howell was joined at the press conference by Majority Leader Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights), Republican Caucus Chairman Tim Hugo (R-Fairfax), Majority Whip Jackson Miller (R-Manassas), Deputy Majority Leader Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah), House Committee Chairs and other Republican legislators.
“The House of Delegates is leading the way to a stronger Virginia,” said Majority Leader Cox. “Nearly every major initiative passed in Virginia over the last five years is the work of the Republican-led House of Delegates; this year is no different. The House is spearheading the major policy ideas being advanced this session: charter schools, right to work, GO Virginia, COPN reform, the bipartisan second amendment agreement and a comprehensive agenda to combat domestic violence. We are proud of the work we are doing to strengthen Virginia’s economy, ensure children have the opportunity to get the education they deserve, improve access to quality, affordable healthcare, and keep our families and communities safe.”
“Thanks to the hard work of the members of the House Appropriations Committee, we are preparing to finalize the House’s proposal for the new, two-year state budget, which we will unveil on Sunday,” said House Appropriations Committee Chairman S. Chris Jones (R-Suffolk). “We are crafting a conservative and responsible state budget that carefully spends taxpayer dollars while making strategic and targeted investments in the core functions of state government. We will make prudent investments that support the legislative priorities of the House while protecting our stellar bond rating and our status as one of the nation’s best managed states. Once the budget is in conference, we will work efficiently with the Senate in order to finish the budget on time.”
