VDOT: Stay home Monday to avoid snow, ice

Chris Graham

winter weather snowCrews with the Virginia Department of Transportation will report to work this evening in response to a winter storm that will leave Central Virginia roads slick with snow and ice through Tuesday morning. While lighter traffic volumes are expected due to the Monday holiday, motorists are urged to alter their plans to avoid driving in these conditions.

Working around the clock in 12-hour shifts, VDOT operators will plow accumulated snow and treat roads with abrasives for traction and to aid melting. However, with freezing rain in the Monday midday forecast, motorists should expect slick and hazardous conditions even on treated roads.

Crews will closely monitor bridge decks, overpasses and ramps, which freeze first. VDOT is working with utility companies and tree-cutting crews in preparation for downed power lines and tree damage due to icing.

Motorists should tune in to local media for weather information and visit 511Virginia.org or call 511 for real-time road conditions. Details about VDOT’s winter-weather preparation and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org.
