William and Mary standout free safety DeAndre Houston-Carson will showcase his talents in front of coaches, scouts and front office personnel from all 32 NFL teams when he participates at the upcoming 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 23 and going through Monday, Feb. 29, full coverage of the combine will be televised by the NFL Network. Houston-Carson is scheduled to work out with the defensive backs on Monday, Feb. 29. Media interviews for the defensive backs will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Houston-Carson becomes the sixth Tribe player invited to the combine, as wide receiver Tre McBride (2015), cornerback B.W. Webb (2013), defensive end Adrian Tracy (2010), quarterback Mike Cook (1999) and offensive lineman Archie Harris (1987) also participated at the event.
Houston-Carson will look to join six former Tribe players who are currently on NFL rosters – Jerome Couplin III (Philadelphia Eagles), Jonathan Grimes (Houston Texans), Sean Lissemore (San Diego Chargers), Tre McBride (Tennessee Titans), Mike Reilly (Arizona Cardinals) and B.W. Webb (Tennessee Titans).
Projected as high as a second round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, Houston-Carson recently competed against some of the nation’s top professional prospects at the prestigious Senior Bowl last month.
A consensus Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) first-team All-American (Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, STATS, Walter Camp, College Sporting News), Houston-Carson effectively transitioned from an all-league cornerback to one of the country’s top free safeties this season. A finalist for the 2015 STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Year award, the Woodford, Va., native was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association co-Defensive Player of the Year and was one of three finalists for the Dudley Award. Additionally, he was honored as the state’s defensive player of the year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
The first-team all-conference selection led W&M in tackles (109) and ranked first in the league in tackles per game among defensive backs (8.4). Additionally, he ranked tied for second in the CAA in interceptions (four) and interception return yards (124). A two-time CAA Special Teams Player of the Week, he has also posted a pair of blocks.
The Woodford, Va., native’s impressive career stats include 293 tackles, 10 interceptions and nine blocks.
