Nor’Easter to impact #13 Virginia home game with Syracuse on Saturday?

winter weather snowCentral Virginia is in line to get up to a foot of snow Thursday night into Saturday, potentially impacting #13 UVA’s noon Saturday tip with Syracuse.

It wouldn’t seem likely that the game would be canceled due to snow. Both teams play early in the week – Syracuse at Duke on Monday, Virginia at home against Clemson on Tuesday, and Syracuse, as the road team, would not seem to have any trouble getting to Charlottesville ahead of the game, particularly with the early forecasts helping with any needed alterations to travel plans.

The impact would mainly be on fans who may have a hard time getting to the game.

The forecast for the storm has snow beginning late Thursday night, continuing heavy at times through the day on Friday, before tapering off into snow showers Saturday morning.

The last time a major snowstorm impacted a Virginia home game was in 2010, when the Cavs hosted Wake Forest on an early February Saturday in a half-empty John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage said in a statement about that game in 2010 that the school was following ACC policy in proceeding with plans to play the game, and encouraged fans to stay at home, instead of risking their safety to get to the game.

“We are following ACC protocol and Saturday’s game will be played,” Littlepage said in the statement that day. “Fans should make certain they can get safely to the game before making the decision to attend in these weather conditions. We encourage fans having to travel by car to stay at home and watch the game on television or listen to it on the radio.”

According to VirginiaSports.com, 5,988 fans braved the weather to attend that 2010 game.
