vatechJames Summers ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and East Carolina came back from an early 14-0 deficit to post a 35-28 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday in Greenville, N.C.

Summers split time at quarterback with Blake Kemp, and the two-headed monster kept Virginia Tech off-balance as the Pirates (2-2) put up 410 yards of total offense.

Kemp was 9-for-12 passing for 118 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The INT helped set up the Hokies’ first score, a 1-yard TD run by Trey Edmunds, and a Brendan Motley-to-Ryan Malleck 7-yard touchdown pass made it 14-0 Tech with 7:13 to go in the first quarter.

A 3-yard Kemp TD run and a Kemp 11-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Brown tied the game at 14-14 before the end of the first 15 minutes, and a Summers 5-yard scoring run made it 21-14 ECU at the half.

Summers connected with Isaiah Jones on a 26-yard touchdown pass with 10:06 to go in the third quarter to put East Carolina up 28-14.

Sam Rogers scored on a 2-yard run to bring the Hokies back to 28-21 at the 6:47 mark of the third, but another Summers score, on a 41-yard QB keeper, pushed the lead back to 14 at 35-21 with 3:43 to go in the third quarter.

Motley scored on a 5-yard run with 8:08 to go in the game to cap a 95-yard drive that brought the Hokies back to 35-28, but Virginia Tech would not threaten again thereafter.
