Studying at home has a lot of advantages, and for many people who have work and family commitments, it may be their only option to get the career they want. In the past, there was only a limited number of subjects you could study online, but nowadays, there are many different subjects you could study from home.

Here are some degrees and courses you can do online that you may not have known about.

  1. Social media marketing

Ever wondered who fills corporate Twitter, Facebook and other social media pages with content? While social media looks easy, it’s a specialized field, and demand for people with specific skills is on the rise. You can do a degree in social media or digital marketing from home and find remote roles to get some experience while you study. The great thing about this kind of role is that you can work from anywhere in the world, so if you want to be a digital nomad, it’s a good start.

  1. Teaching and education

Getting a degree in education doesn’t mean you have to go back to college full time. Many people who already work with children, or have some sort of teaching experience, opt to do an education degree at home while they work. There is a big shortage of teachers in the USA, so once you graduate, you should be able to find a role to suit you. Of course, you aren’t confined to teaching in a classroom. This degree could lead to anything from social work to online tutoring.

  1. Statistics

Another skill that’s in short supply is applied statistics. If you’re good with numbers and analytical, doing an MS statistics at home could lead to a number of interesting, well-paid careers. Doing this kind of degree teaches you to use statistics in the real world, so you could end up working as a data scientist, data engineer, statistician or in many other roles across the globe. If you want to work remotely or become a digital nomad, then this is a great subject to study, as many roles in the tech industry are flexible and allow you to work from anywhere you choose.

  1. Nursing

You can’t become an RN purely by studying online, as you need experience in patient care. However, you can start your nursing career by getting a nursing diploma or associate degree online, the studying for your licensing exam. In most cases, getting your degree in a hospital-based setting is the fastest option, but this can mean long hours and a lack of flexibility, which may not be ideal if you have other commitments. Online programs allow you to learn the basics and get into entry level roles where you can then work your way up.

  1. Architecture

If you’ve always loved looking at architecture, from homes to public buildings, and have a flair for design, then you may be interested in becoming an architect. After all, it’s a prestigious and well-paid career. While you can’t completely become an architect with online study, as you need to do a course accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board, you can start the process by getting course credits from an online college. Some colleges also offer courses that are a combination of online study and short residential stays, so you get the advantages of face to face learning, without needing to completely uproot your life.

  1. Business

An MBA – Master of Business Administration – is a prestigious qualification, so many people are surprised you can do it online. If you decide to do an online MBA, choosing the right college is key. Not all online colleges offer the same high-quality education, so it’s important to choose one that offers high quality education. The good news is that if you have an MBA from a well-regarded college, there are a number of careers you can go into, many of which have a shortage of qualified candidates. This can help you achieve an excellent salary and lets you work in lots of interesting companies.

  1. Creative subjects

You don’t have to attend a liberal arts college to let out your creative side. If you want to do something more creative with your life, without sacrificing your steady career, there are a number of creative subjects you can study at home. From graphic design to literature or art, doing this sort of degree online allows you to study the thing you love in your spare time, perhaps even doing a degree you wanted to do when you were younger but didn’t have the chance.
