Mark Warner on Donald Trump: ‘I don’t think he has the temperament’

mark warnerMark Warner turned success in business into a political career. So what does Warner think of self-styled successful businessman Donald Trump’s foray into politics?

“Most of the people that I know in business have got a story of lawsuits or stories of being a slow pay to his vendors,” was the first answer from Warner, a Democrat who represents Virginia in the United States Senate, in an interview with Augusta Free Press and The News Virginian during a visit to Waynesboro on Friday.

“He puts himself forward as this wildly successful businessman, although we’ll never know because we don’t have his tax returns. I mean, there’s a lot of speculation that he may be the king of debt, that he may not have much equity,” said Warner, who added that he doesn’t think Trump “has the temperament” to serve as commander-in-chief.

Warner views the selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a former congressman, as Trump “doubling down on his more extreme policies.”

“Pence was one of the original members of the Tea Party. Michele Bachmann started it, and he was one of the first members of Congress to join it. That attitude, that we’re never going to compromise, it’s my way or the highway, that’s the last thing that Washington needs more of,” Warner said.
