Swift Boater named to state post

One of the stars of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group that sought to malign 2004 Democratic Party presidential candidate John Kerry’s military service will serve as the commissioner for the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.
Paul Galanti was appointed to the post by Gov. Bob McDonnell. The appointment was announced by the governor’s office on Thursday.
Galanti was a prisoner of war for nearly seven years during the Vietnam War.
Nelson gets $1.8M for broadband access

Nelson County has been awarded $1,826,646 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand broadband Internet service in rural areas of the county. The funding for the Nelson County Broadband Project was announced by Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello on Thursday.
“These stimulus funds give a major boost to residents of Nelson County. Not only will schools, the Blue Ridge Medical Center, and a library benefit, but up to 1,500 households and 250 businesses will have access to more affordable broadband service. This is a critical investment to make our rural communities more competitive and enhance local education, health care, and job growth,” Perriello said. Read more

The Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office and the FBI are confirming details regarding an act of vandalism reported on Tuesday, March 23 at the Ivy home of the older brother of Congressman Tom Perriello.
The family of Bo Perriello discovered a gas smell when they returned home that day and discovered that the supply hose connecting a liquid petroleum tank to burners on a portable gas grill was severed, according to authorities.
The grill was located on a deck adjacent to a screened porch on the back of the house. Read more
Degner to announce in 26th

Harrisonburg Mayor Kai Degner is throwing his hat into the ring for the soon-to-be-open 26th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
“At a time when the General Assembly’s decisions are so severely impacting local government budgets, be it in education, transportation, law enforcement, environmental security, social services and more, we need a delegate from the Shenandoah Valley that will stand and represent the people, services, and local businesses who stand to lose,” said Degner, who was elected to Harrisonburg City Council in 2008 in a Democratic sweep of the three open seats on City Council that year. The Love Affair with Tony Bennett hit a rocky point for Cavalier fans, looking back on it now, sometime around the snowstorm that sent the 14-7 UVa. team back home from Maryland and set up a killer stretch of games that eventually knocked the ‘Hoos from NCAA Tournament contention.
Losing 10 of the last 11, then losing star sophomore Sylven Landesberg and heralded freshman Tristan Spurlock, has pushed some in Wahoo Nation to the brink of wanting to maybe re-evaluate the ol’ relationship.

Fifth District Republican nomination candidate Laurence Verga issued a statement this morning on the incident at the home of the older brother of Congressman Tom Perriello.

McDonnell signs Healthcare Freedom Act

Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the Virginia Healthcare Freedom Act in a mid-afternoon ceremony today in Richmond.
McDonnell, a Republican, was joined at the bill signing by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, State Sens. Steve Martin, Fred Quayle and Jill Vogel and Del. Bob Marshall, all Republicans.
“We all agree that we must expand access to quality health care and reduce costs for all Virginians. However, that should not be accomplished through an unprecedented federal mandate on individuals that we believe violates the U.S. Constitution,” McDonnell said. Read more
