Analyst: Fiscal outlook for localities not good

Staunton City Council got a bit of a fiscal reality check on Thursday from James Reginbal from the Richmond consulting firm Fiscal Analytics.

“Nobody in Virginia has really felt the effects of this recession yet. Localities are behind the state because the state has been able to shield localities from the worst effects so far,” Regimbal told City Council members at their staff briefing. Read more

UVa. baseball class ranked ninth nationally

Virginia’s 2009 baseball recruiting class has been ranked ninth nationally by Baseball America, as announced by the magazine on Tuesday. This marks the second Top-10 ranking this class has accrued – Collegiate Baseball ranked the class 10th in September.

“I am very excited about this new group of players,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “It is a very talented class with some players who will make an immediate impact in our program. This is a group of athletic position players and pitchers who possess the ability to compete right away. Above all, this class of young men is a great fit for The University of Virginia. Our assistant coaches, Kevin McMullan and Karl Kuhn, have once again brought another stellar Top-10 recruiting class to Charlottesville. Kevin and Karl deserve all the credit in bringing these young men into our program.” Read more

Mark Warner | Supporting Virginia’s small businesses

We have seen some promising signs in recent weeks that our economy is on the path toward recovery, but I continue to hear from small business owners across Virginia about their difficulties in getting access to credit.

While Congress took unprecedented action last fall to help stabilize Wall Street, we can do more to support business owners on Main Street. These small businesses and independent retailers provide strength to our local economies and, if history is any guide, could create up to 70% of new jobs after the recession.  Read more

David Reynolds | The undercard

Allow me to let you in on a little secret. No candidate runs just to become the attorney general of the Commonwealth of Virginia, or to be the lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. They run to become governor of Virginia. They run to be able to trade in a longer title for a shorter one.

Virginia, what a crazy state! It is the only one where you have to run twice to become governor. And then you are only allowed to serve a single four-year term. That’s a lot of running for very little sitting. No wonder once in office so little is accomplished. The winner is tired. Read more

Letter | John Horejsi

Why is Virginia ranked last in stimulus spending? Gov. Kaine, as reported in the media – that Virginia Ranked Last in Stimulus Spending – is apparently in no hurry to spend stimulus money, money given to the state of Virginia that could create and sustain jobs.

The stimulus money is available, but is not being used. What is impeding action to infuse the Virginia economy with the stimulus funds to develop and preserve family wage jobs? Read more

The American Diabetes Association states the following: Did you know that two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease and stroke? Make the Link! Diabetes, heart disease and stroke is an initiative of the American Diabetes Association and the American College of Cardiology, aimed at increasing awareness of the link between diabetes and heart disease.

The ADA stresses that diabetes management is more than control of blood glucose. People with diabetes must also manage blood pressure and cholesterol and talk to their health provider to learn about other ways to reduce their chance for heart attacks and stroke. Read more

Jim Bishop | Make a New Plan, Stan, and Set Yourself Free

Nothing ever comes out as planned.

That’s a variation on Murphy’s (in)famous law, “Anything that can go wrong, will.”

Amen to that, sir. Not only that, but Murphy was an optimist. Which begs the question, is it possible for an optimist to be pleasantly surprised? Read more
