Georgia Tech took control with an 18-play, 82-yard drive to start the second half, then took advantage of Virginia’s first difficulties in the red zone in 2009, en route to posting a 34-9 win over the Cavs in a battle for first place in the ACC Coastal Saturday in Charlottesville.
Jonathan Dwyer broke a 20-yard run on a third-and-eight play to key the backbreaking Yellow Jacket drive, which took 10:47 off the clock and extended Tech’s 13-6 halftime lead to 20-6.
Virginia (3-4, 2-1 ACC) took the ball to the Georgia Tech 6 on its next possession and scored an apparent touchdown on a six-yard pass from Jameel Sewell to Kris Burd, but the pass was ruled incomplete on the field, and the call was upheld on a booth review.
A Robert Randolph field goal at the 14:51 mark of the fourth quarter made it 20-9 Georgia Tech (7-1, 5-1 ACC). The Jackets answered with a 20-yard Anthony Allen touchdown run at the 9:37 mark to put the game out of reach at 27-9.
Josh Nesbitt scored from two yards out with 3:04 to go to finish the scoring.
Tech ran for 362 yards on the game, 235 in the second half. The Jackets had two runners over 100 yards – Jonathan Dwyer had 125 yards on 25 carries, and Anthony Allen had 103 yards on 11 yards.
Nesbitt ran for 82 yards on 21 carries and threw for 85 yards on 4-of-8 passing.
Virginia had just 198 yards of total offense, and had just 71 yards from scrimmage in the second half.
Sewell completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts for 168 yards.
The Cavs ran the ball only 12 times for 30 yards.
