Sam Rasoul | Been here before

Down eight points in the polls with one week left, Creigh Deeds lost his 2005 statewide race for attorney general to Bob McDonnell by about 300 votes out of 2 million!

Deja vu? When I spoke with Creigh yesterday, he reminded me that we are in the same exact spot now, except this time Virginia has more Democrats than we did in 2005, and Obama’s victory proved that last year. Read more

AFP Focus | Checking homework in 20th

Two issues to delve into the 20th District race today, both involving homework.

First, regarding Adrian Rogers and Dickie Bell being a “Republican for a Reason.” The website for Bell, the Republican nominee, featured a quote from the late Rogers, the former head of the American Southern Baptist Convention, on socialism on a webpage titled “Republican for a Reason.” The Bell campaign team failed to do its homework, though. Rogers, an advocate of the inerrancy of the Bible, when asked once his thoughts on what the Bible held on the issue of slavery, answered that slavery was a “much-maligned institution” and offered further that if it had not been abolished “we would not have such a welfare problem.” Read more

Collins among ACC players of the week

Florida State’s Christian Ponder (Colleyville, Tex), who threw for a career-high 395 yards in last Thursday’s win over North Carolina and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller (Lake Butler, Fla.), the ACC’s career leader in all-purpose yardage and kick returns for touchdowns, headline this week’s list of Atlantic Coast Conference players of the week.

Press Gaggle | Press Secretary Robert Gibbs

Monday, Oct. 26, 2009
MR. GIBBS: Neatly assembled, very nice. How’s everyone today?

Q Good.

MR. GIBBS: Fire away.

Q Afghanistan. Is the President getting any new options beyond the ones that General McChrystal offered a while back?

MR. GIBBS: I haven’t gotten a long download of today’s meeting. I know it ran a little bit longer. That’s why we took off a little bit later. I haven’t gotten a full download on that. I know they’re still focused on reviewing and assessing and making a decision, but I don’t have any information on that. Read more

VPT InDepth | Road worriers

You’re Pierce Homer, the Secretary of Transportation in Virginia. For five years, you’ve been overseeing reforms at the Virginia Department of Transportation that have six in seven projects completed on time and on budget, nearly three times the rate of efficiency that we saw out of VDOT from the Allen and Gilmore administrations. You’ve seen a bipartisan effort to provide for regional transportation funding solutions thrown out by the courts as being unconstitutional, rendering the campaign promise of Tim Kaine from 2005 to work toward a solution to the funding dilemma as unfulfilled.

You’re getting ready in all likelihood to hand over the roads reins to a Republican successor with Bob McDonnell’s seemingly insurmountable lead in the governor’s race a week out from Election Day.

You know well the work that has been done, the work that is yet to be done.

What do you tell your successor in the debriefing that is to come in the winter transition? Read more

Jackets sting ‘Hoos in second half, win in rain, 34-9

Georgia Tech took control with an 18-play, 82-yard drive to start the second half, then took advantage of Virginia’s first difficulties in the red zone in 2009, en route to posting a 34-9 win over the Cavs in a battle for first place in the ACC Coastal Saturday in Charlottesville.

Jonathan Dwyer broke a 20-yard run on a third-and-eight play to key the backbreaking Yellow Jacket drive, which took 10:47 off the clock and extended Tech’s 13-6 halftime lead to 20-6.

Virginia (3-4, 2-1 ACC) took the ball to the Georgia Tech 6 on its next possession and scored an apparent touchdown on a six-yard pass from Jameel Sewell to Kris Burd, but the pass was ruled incomplete on the field, and the call was upheld on a booth review. Read more
