Museum and Gallery Walk this weekend

The Arts Council of the Valley is pleased to announce the fall 2009 Museum and Gallery Walk, a biannual event that brings downtown Harrisonburg to life with art, music, dance, and more! This event begins the First Fridays Downtown season in April and concludes the season in October. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, and everyone is invited.  Read more

Yoder to be featured at Waynesboro Public Library

Waynesboro Public Library is commemorating the art of long-time Waynesboro resident Ray Yoder with a special program and art exhibit. The program takes place on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. and will be given by Yoder’s son, judge Ronnie Yoder.

The art exhibit, encompassing his career of 65 years, is on display for the whole month of October with works on both floors of the library. He painted primarily in watercolors. Read more

BRCC program offers glimpse into underage drinking, drug use

Life on the streets takes on a whole new meaning when you’re a firefighter/paramedic. The streets are where the crashes occur…where poor choices have played out…where teamwork is a must…where split seconds can save a life.

It’s these kinds of life-changing experiences that create the backdrop for a dramatic, gripping program called Street Smart that will be presented to students on Monday, Oct. 5 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at Blue Ridge Community College in the Plecker Center Auditorium. Street Smart takes teens into the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/paramedics as they work to save the lives of youth who have made poor choices when it comes to underage drinking or using illegal drugs. Last week, the Congress took an important action to protect seniors from increases in their 2010 Medicare Part B premiums. I joined with a bipartisan majority in the House to vote in favor of H.R. 3631, the Medicare Premium Fairness Act. With Social Security benefits expected to remain at the same level next year, an increase in Medicare premiums would cut into seniors’ Social Security. Read more

“Imagine what this would do for kids in Waynesboro,” Waynesboro High School football coach Steve Isaacs tells me, going into detail on his vision for a new synthetic-turf athletic field at the city high school.

“Kids would grow up wanting to play on that field,” Isaacs said. “Football, soccer, whatever. It would be something that kids across the area would talk about. It would put Waynesboro on the map.” Read more

Dukes scorch Flames late, 24-10

Sophomore tailback Corwin Acker (Landover, Md./Blake) ran for a career-high 147 yards and two second-half touchdowns to lead James Madison to a 24-10 non-conference football victory at Liberty Saturday.

Acker scored on a 65-yard run to break a 10-10 tie early during the final quarter and later had a 13-yard scoring carry to all but seal the victory for the Dukes. Read more
