As a small-business owner, I find that people expect me to grumble about the increase in the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour as of July 24. But I’m not grumbling. In fact, I think it should be raised further.
Every time the minimum wage goes up, I find that new customers come to my bicycle shop because they have more money to spend, and some of my old customers buy more when they visit. With the economy in the slump it’s in today, this kind of boost in consumer spending not only helps individual entrepreneurs, but helps the country as a whole to recover. Read more

What does Curren need to do?

There were no polls, as one of the candidates for the Republican Party nomination in the 20th, Dickie Bell, famously tried to assert upon the departure of State Del. Chris Saxman from the 20th District race two weeks ago, but conventional wisdom would have had Saxman ahead of Democrat Erik Curren if there had been a poll to back that notion up.
That same conventional wisdom has Curren in a much better position in the 20th whether it’s Bell, the apparent favorite for the nomination, or any of the others from among the seven-candidate GOP field that he’s up against this fall. Read more

$14M in grants to Virginia local service providers includes local monies

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine on Friday announced the award of more than $14 million in grants to Virginia’s homeless services providers, including more than $340,000 in grants to local providers of services to the homeless.
The grants, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and funded through a combination of state and federal resources, will be used to provide services to homeless citizens or those at risk of becoming homeless. Read more

Openings in local exchange-student program

Late summer brings to mind images of the county fair, beautiful gardens and cool swimming pools. It is also a time of excitement for many young people soon to be traveling to the United States for a year abroad and living with a new family. However, many students still need a home.
