Sam Rasoul | Why I support Creigh Deeds

Over the past several months, I have had the pleasure of traveling our great Commonwealth learning more about the struggles facing everyday Virginians. In that time, I have come to one stark conclusion. As a proud Virginian, the single most important elected office to me is the governor. We need a leader who has a vision much like President Obama and former governor Mark Warner and our current governor, Tim Kaine. We need a leader who wants to move Virginia forward. Read more

David Reynolds | Circle June 9

That’s a Tuesday. It is always a Tuesday when too few of us take time out of our daily lives in order to maintain our way of life.
Election days in the USA always fall on Tuesdays. Don’t ask me why. They just do. Or as we say in these parts, “We have always done it that way.” In the Commonwealth of Virginia we will have an election on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. If you are registered, you are invited. Please accept.  Read more

Two rest areas saved, but residency office still on cutting board

Two Central Shenandoah Valley rest areas have escaped the Virginia Department of Transportation chopping block as the transportation department finalizes its recommendations for budget cuts to the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
The rest areas at Fairfield on southbound Interstate 81 and New Market on northbound I-81 had been slated for closure in an earlier round of recommendations to trim $12 million by closing 25 of the Commonwealth’s 42 interstate rest areas. Those two and two others on the I-81 corridor – at Radford and Ironto – were taken off the closure list. Read more

Targeted tax relief for the unemployed

I noticed that Waynesboro City Council has added to its agenda for its staff briefing tonight an item to discuss tax relief for the elderly and disabled. I’ve been talking up behind the scenes an idea springing from that senior-focused tax-relief effort that I think could gain some traction given the economic times. And the idea, local property-tax relief for the unemployed, seems to be meeting with support from the people I’ve broached the topic with to date. Read more

‘Housekeeping,’ sure

You’re lucky if you haven’t come across the self-delusioned among us who are still convinced that Barack Obama and the state of Hawaii didn’t cover up the fact that he was born somewhere other than the United States.  And now the self-delusioned have a voice in Congress in Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte, who has signed on as a cosponsor of legislation that would require presidential candidates to provide proof of their birthplace.
