Wanted: Fairness and balance to tax-rate coverage

One of those Funny How Things Work moments came to my attention this morning. Tonight comes the second public hearing on the city tax rate, in effect, anyway, with the scheduled public hearing on tonight’s meeting agenda to “receive public comments on the proposed Real Property Tax Rate due to the reassessment.” Read more

Just doesn’t add up

One last bit on the NCAA baseball tournament BS, and I promise I’ll be done.
I’ve heard talk about how the NCAA was looking to make the seedings of the tourney field basically a 1-64 kind of thing. Examining that one, UC-Irvine, the host of the Irvine Regional and the #6 national seed, would stand to play the winner of a #27 vs. #38 matchup in the second round of a 64-team tournament. EMU fares well in Recyclemania

Eastern Mennonite University placed 28th in the “waste minimization” category out of 510 colleges and universities in a nationwide recycling challenge called Recylemania held during spring semester.
“That is the most comprehensive indicator of how well a school manages its waste, as it inherently includes any reducing and reusing of waste material in addition to recycling,” according to Jonathan Lantz-Trissel, recycling and waste reduction coordinator at EMU. Read more

Last November in Memphis, a 9-year-old member of Brenda Alexander’s family was shot in street-fight crossfire. Following a painful struggle with the child’s abdominal injuries, Alexander says, “Praise the Lord, he’s doing very well” – though he and his sister remain afraid to walk home. Read more

Better late than never

It’s good to hear Steve Landes say he will work “as a leader for our area to build our local and state economy, especially during this economic downturn.” Question – what took you so long in getting here?
The only thing I can think of where he has done anything to “build our local and state economy” was participate on the periphery of the effort to bring SRI International to the Valley back in 2006, and that was much more a deal involving the local economic-development folks in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, the Shenandoah Valley Partnership, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the governor’s office than it was anything to do with our local Republican legislators.  Read more

Hook writer gets star turn on ‘Jeopardy’

The trip to California to appear on “Jeopardy” was quite eventful for Hook staff writer Lindsay Barnes. And yeah, he played the game, but that wasn’t the highlight.
His girlfriend, Kilsy Torres, tagged along for the adventure, and Barnes decided to take the opportunity of the cross-country trip to “use the Pacific Ocean as my backdrop to propose to her.” Read more

Right back at’cha, Liberty U.

Good ol’ Liberty U., that bastion of narrowmindedness – you wouldn’t expect anything other than to hear that the school has formally revoked its recognition of the campus Democratic Party club, and will subject Liberty U. Democrats who still consider themselves Liberty U. Democrats to possible expulsion.
Whaddya say we do the same thing to Liberty U.? Read more
