Money see, money do

At first glance, it doesn’t make sense to me that Barack Obama could stand to gain any traction at all with voters with his stance on not accepting campaign contributions from PACs and lobbyists.

But as my friend Steve Farnsworth points out, correctly, Obama could stand to lose some support among voters for whom doing the right thing is a key issue by not toeing the line as he has.

“In the case of Obama, one of his main campaign themes is that he’s a different kind of politician. And accepting PAC money would suggest that he’s one of these same-old, same-old politicians that people have gotten tired of,” said Farnsworth, a political-science professor at the University of Mary Washington. Remember the “Saturday Night Live” skits about Al Gore and his Social Security lockbox? Might be time to dust them off.

“It is time to put ‘trust’ back in the Transportation Trust Fund,” said House Transportation Committee vice-chair Glenn Oder, R-Newport News, in announcing Monday that he has introduced legislation for consideration in next week’s special legislative session on transportation that will create what he calls a “constitutional lockbox” for the Transportation Trust Fund. There was once a humorous story teaching the Indians about the stock market. It was a story of a man from the city going to some alienated village and telling the farmers that he wants to buy monkeys for Rs. 10 each. People started grabbing monkeys all over their village and sold them to the merchant. Later, the merchant says this is not enough and is now willing to pay Rs. 15 per monkey. Read more

Augusta County vineyard goes for gold

An Augusta County vineyard that will be featured in the Summer 2008 edition of The New Dominion Magazine is now an award-winning Augusta County vineyard.

Barren Ridge Vineyards won a gold medal at the recent Virginia State Fair Wine Competition.

The gold medal was given to the vineyard’s 2007 Viognier. Read more
