James Madison rallied to tie the game 8-8 in regulation before falling 10-9 in double overtime at Towson in Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
The defending two-time CAA champion Dukes saw their winning streak end at six games as JMU completed regular-season play with a 10-6 overall record and a 6-1 CAA mark.
Towson finished first in the CAA with a 7-0 league record as the Tigers won their seventh straight game. The Tigers improved their overall record to 12-3.
Towson earned the number one seed in the CAA Tournament and the right to host the four-team event, scheduled for April 27 and 29.
JMU will be the number two seed and will face number three seed Hofstra in an April 27 semifinal game. Towson will play fourth-seeded Drexel in the other semifinal.
Hofstra and Drexel tied for third in the CAA standings, and Hofstra earned the higher seed by virtue of its regular-season win over Drexel.
Towson’s Sarah Hogan scored off a pass from Kelly Custer with 26 seconds left in the three-minute sudden-death overtime period to give the Tigers the win.
Hogan’s goal ended a contest that had five ties and three lead changes.
JMU led 3-1 midway through the opening period before the Tigers closed the half with three scores in the final 12:44 to take a 4-3 lead into intermission.
Just 45 seconds into the second half JMU senior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) tied the contest at 4-4 when she converted a free-position shot.
However, Towson responded with a 4-1 scoring run to take an 8-5 lead with 12:52 on the clock.
Then JMU scored three in a row to tie the game at 8-8. The comeback started after senior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) controlled a draw and fed a pass to sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty), who scored the Dukes’ sixth goal at the 12:38 mark.
Dukes’ freshman Steph Finley (Media, Pa./Sacred Heart) converted a free-position attempt with 9:48 left to cut the Towson lead to 8-7.
JMU senior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) controlled the ensuing draw, and Zabel netted the tying goal with 9:07 remaining.
In the remaining minutes of regulation, Towson had two shots, one of which was blocked and the other was saved by JMU freshman goalkeeper Schylar Healy (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty).
JMU had three shots in the final 38 seconds of regulation, but the first was wide and the other two were stopped by Towson goalie Mary Teeters.
In the six-minute full overtime, JMU took a 9-8 lead after senior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) scored on a free-position attempt as time expired in the first three-minute period. Towson’s Christina Antonini responded with a free-position score with 2:10 left in the second three-minute period. The Dukes had one final opportunity to score but a Zabel shot was saved by Teeters.
In the sudden-death period, Towson’s Hogan not only netted the game-winner but also controlled the opening draw that gave the Tigers possession and a chance to score the clinching goal.
JMU was led in scoring by Zabel, Kimener and McHugh with two goals apiece. Zabel’s two assists gave her 43 for the season and enabled her to take sole possession of the Dukes’ season assist record. She entered the game sharing the record of 41 with Megan Riley (’99).
Towson got three goals each from Ashley Waldron and Kelly Custer, and Andi Raymond had three assists.
JMU held a 26-19 shot advantage over the Tigers and also had 14 draw controls to seven for Towson. Teeters finished with nine saves, and Healy had five saves.
For JMU, Zabel and senior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) led the team with two ground balls each. McHugh and Lane tied for game honors with three draw controls apiece.
Chakrian led JMU with two caused turnovers.
