Groundbreaking research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine that aims to dramatically increase the number of lungs that can be used for transplant has received a $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The work seeks to use a drug developed at UVA to rehabilitate lungs that are currently deemed unusable.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has directed $11 million in his forthcoming biennial budget to the City of Richmond for the development, creation, and enhancement of the Slavery and Freedom Heritage Site in Richmond. The proposed funding continues the governor’s commitment to strengthening Virginia’s tourism industry, which is a major revenue and job-driver in the Commonwealth.

Mark Warner (D-VA) led a group of Senators in introducing bipartisan legislation to ensure volunteer firefighters and other first responders can continue protecting communities that rely on them. Some volunteer firefighters are nominally paid, and most volunteer first responders have other full-time employment.

Heisman Trophy finalist Jameis Winston of Florida State leads the 2013 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Football Team, as selected by the league’s 14 head coaches. Winston was one of three unanimous first-team selections to the All-ACC team.
