Friends of Mark Warner, the 2014 campaign of U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner of Virginia, announced its year-end fundraising numbers today. During the fourth quarter of 2013, the campaign received contributions totaling nearly $1.6 million. Friends of Mark Warner ended 2013 with more than $7.1 million cash-on-hand.

Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced the membership for the newly-created Task Force on Improving Mental Health Services and Crisis Response. The membership includes leaders in the mental health field, law enforcement communities, the judicial system, private hospitals, and individuals receiving mental health services and their families.

Attorney General-elect Mark Herring today announced the appointment of two more senior officials in the Office of Attorney General. Herring will be sworn in as Virginia’s 48th Attorney General on Jan. 11. Stuart Raphael, currently a partner with the Litigation Team of Hunton & Williams LLP, will serve as Virginia’s Solicitor General.

Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe announced at a press conference on Thursday the nomination of Secretary Maurice Jones as Secretary of Commerce and Trade. Jones, a Kenbridge native, is the former president of the Pilot Media Group, and currently serves as deputy secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that Alexander Industries, a privately held American manufacturer of firearms, will invest $2.88 million to relocate and expand its operations in Dublin Industrial Park in Pulaski County. Virginia successfully competed against South Dakota and Texas for the project, which will create 64 new jobs.

For years, retirees Jim and Louise Malloy have enacted a wide range of physical maladies in their role as “standardized” patients at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Last month, Gov. Bob McDonnell unveiled his two-year budget for Fiscal Years 2015 and 2016. The governor presented the budgets in a speech to the Joint Money Committees of the General Assembly.

The legislature does not have a tradition of passing a resolution at the beginning of each year stating as individuals often attempt to do with their “new year resolutions” what will be done that year. Debate on such a resolution would take up the entirety of the session, and if ever agreed upon may likely be forgotten as realities of the year and the session set in.
