This past week, as our nation came together on Veterans Day to honor those who have served our country, I traveled across the Fifth District and talked with many of Virginia’s brave veterans. In addition to attending several Veterans Day events, I visited McGuire VA Medical Center, the Salem VA Medical Center, and three Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, more commonly known as CBOCs, in Danville, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville.

On Wednesday at the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Fishburne Military School, cadets placed American flags on grounds in the school’s quad in memory of Fishburne alums who gave their life to their country in wars dating back to the Spanish-American War in the 19th century.

Thank you. To many, these are just two simple words. But to our veterans, they mean much more. Today, we honor the men and women who for generations have served our country with great sacrifice and dedication. We are blessed to live in the United States, and every day I am thankful for the service of our men and women in uniform.

Fishburne Military School saluted the military in its annual Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday. Col. William Coffin with the Virginia Army National Guard provided the keynote address.

Today Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Virginia has been certified by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs as the first state in the nation to functionally end veteran homelessness.

As we commemorate Veterans Day, we remember with gratitude all those brave service members who throughout American history, have courageously fought to preserve our freedoms.

Trey VanHout of Roseland, Virginia, a junior majoring in materials science and engineering in the College of Engineering, grew up a Hokie fan. He said he loved the football team and Virginia Tech appealed to him as one of the best engineering schools in the nation.
