Seventeen miles into my first marathon, the 2015 Anthem Richmond Marathon, I was thinking about how I was going to finish. But the sprint for the last mile that I had been envisioning was ultimately out of the plans. Every step was an exercise in just trying to avoid a shutdown cramp.

Today, U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) and a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues held a press conference in the U.S. Capitol to announce the introduction of the Veterans Health Care Staffing Improvement Act, bipartisan legislation to make commonsense changes in staffing policies at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and improve veterans care at VA health care facilities.

It was one of those days where the heat takes your breath away. It was mid-summer in our nation’s capital and the sun beat down on the marble monuments and city sidewalks. I squinted my eyes and stood shoulder to shoulder with members of my staff handing out water bottles as our guests filed off of the buses, slowly but determined, one by one. They were eager. And so were we.
